About Girls in the Game:

Girls in the Game empowers over 2,000 girls each year to develop the confidence and leadership skills necessary to succeed both on and off the field. Together, with a unique focus on peer leadership and education, staff and girls work in partnership to raise the standards of excellence in service for girls. Since its inception in 1995, GIG has emerged as a leader in the field of girls’ health and fitness, serving over 14,000 girls in Chicagoland. Through our five core programs:

  • Game Day: Girls’ Health Fests
  • GIG: After School
  • SummerGames Sports & Leadership Summer Camp
  • Girls’ Advisory Board
  • Parent and Caregiver Initiatives

Girls are experiencing a health crisis with rapidly rising obesity rates, poor eating habits, and a lack of physical activity. Opportunities for youth to be physically active are declining. Most Chicago schools offer P.E. only once per week, and many schools have eliminated recess. Additionally, athletic programs for girls often do not exist, or are not developed adequately to meet girls’ needs. Girls are also at a high risk for poor self-esteem, resulting in unhealthy choices and damaging behaviors. GIG is committed to improving the physical, mental and emotional health of girls from diverse backgrounds. GIG creates a safe space for girls in a gender specific format where girls can develop their voices, speak for themselves, and recognize that they can make positive choices.

WomenOnCall.org volunteers have been critical in furthering our sustainability to ensure we can continue to reach girls in need of healthy opportunities. Maegen Rose has each been an incredible asset to the organization, allowing us to accomplish so much! WomenOnCall.org volunteers have worked in our development department, planning our annual fundraising events. As part of our planning committees, WomenOnCall.org volunteers have helped us exceed our revenue goals every year through contributing their time and expertise. In a small development office, this support is critical and contributes to our ongoing sustainability. We appreciate the high level caliber of all volunteers!

Working with the Girls in the Game staff and volunteers has been an awesome experience. Everyone involved is so committed and supportive. I’m looking forward to a successful Gala on March 5. Many thanks to the staff for letting me share in the joy of supporting girls in Chicago!
