About the The Chicago Foundation for Education
The Chicago Foundation for Education (CFE) increases the academic achievement of Chicago’s public school students by supporting the educators who serve, guide, and teach them. With a staff of five and a corps of more than 200 dedicated volunteers, CFE presents professional development and leadership opportunities, provides financial incentives, and facilitates collaborative networks that foster heightened instructional effectiveness. We continue to promote Character Education throughout all of our programs, which exemplify our guiding principles valuing educational quality, innovation, improvement and integrity.

In 1985, Joyce Rumsfeld and a small group of concerned citizens began working in partnership with Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers to transform learning in classrooms across the city. Since then, CFE has invested more than 5.5 million dollars in CPS educators, impacting nearly 30,000 teachers and more than 1 million students.

Marsha Nathan became a part of our CFE family in January 2009, after contacting us via a volunteer opportunity posting on the “Women on Call” website. Marsha & I connected immediately and we couldn’t be happier to count her amongst our most dedicated and supportive volunteers to this day. Marsha promptly dove into a variety of projects for us, from grant application reviews to office mailing projects, and soon set herself apart as an incredibly special individual. In April 2009, I invited Marsha to serve on our Workshop Planning Committee, which consists of only four to five non-staff members and labors diligently for six months to plan and execute our annual teacher conference. Like every other opportunity Marsha has participated in, she approached this grand and slightly overwhelming task with unbridled enthusiasm. She served as our committee’s raffle and door prize co-chairwoman, securing dozens of donations from both large companies and small community operations. On the day of the event, Marsha was readily available to serve in whatever capacity necessary, and showed initiative by offering to familiarize newer volunteers with their assigned roles and the conference venue. Marsha has been an undeniable asset to our volunteer corps throughout the past fifteen months, and I look forward to having her on board for many years to come!

About Marsha Nathan
Connecting with the Chicago Foundation for Education through WomenOnCall.org has been a perfect fit to Ms. Nathan’s volunteer experiences since retiring from a 36-year career as a Spanish teacher in June 2005. She is dazzled by the energy, creativity, and dedication of CPS teachers and dismayed that their efforts are too often overlooked in the media. The CFE fills this void by rewarding these exceptional educators through its variety of programs and opportunities for growth and to celebrate their accomplishments. Ms. Nathan is glad that she found this opportunity through WomenOnCall.org to volunteer for such a fantastic organization!
