About Annie’s Legacy:

Annie’s Legacy is a resource center in Chicago for women. We offer mentoring and coaching services to women to help them become more self-reliant. Annie’s Legacy started in August, 2006 to honor the life of founder Beverly Billy’s mother, Annie.

Annie was a stay at home wife and mother of 5 kids living her dream. When the pressures of marriage and parenting became more than Annie’s spouse could cope with, abuse became common place in their home. After years of verbal, physical and emotional abuse, Annie packed her kids and moved in with her brother and his family.

At 35 Annie picked up the pieces of her life, learned life skills and became self-reliant. Today, through one-on-one mentoring and workshops, our organization is helping other women gain independence, empowerment and life skills.

As a relatively new organization we greatly depend on volunteers to help us accomplish our mission “to provide resources to women that empowers them to become strong, confident contributors to their homes and communities”. That is why we were glad to learn about Women On Call!

Through Women On Call we have been successful in getting three dynamic women to support our cause. Through their talents, each one has saved us hundreds of dollars by donating their time and expertise.

Our first volunteer, Ms. Rebecca Lemma of Lloyd Lemna Design gave us generous hours of her time and talent designing our 1st brochure. Because of our very busy schedules we met several times over the phone and via e-mail. Becky was very patient with us as we flushed out our mission, purpose, desired outcome and look for our brochure. The end products are two amazing brochures, one in color and one black and white. We are using our brochures to recruit mentees, mentors, donors and volunteers.

I met our 2nd volunteer, Ms. Lee Ann McKay regarding assistance with our 990 application. As this was our first year filing we had no idea of how it was done, when it was due or how to prepare for it. After a two hour meeting with Lee Ann, she left our office with about 20-30 lbs of papers and receipts to review and organize. She knew it would take some time and effort to get it all organized so first she filed for an extension. That action alone relieved us of the worry of penalties and fines, completing the 990 was icing on the cake.

Our 3rd volunteer, Ms. Valerie Corr is an incredibly bright and talented executive. We sought her expertise in public affairs and received a bonus! Ms. Corr looked over several of our documents and our website and offered great ideas for improving our look. She is very talented with wordsmithing, which provided a cleaner, crisper look for our documents. After spending several hours learning more about what we do, she decided to join our board!

Annie’s Legacy welcomes more volunteers in support of our mission. We need volunteers to help us with grant writing, fundraising, workshop presenters in job readiness, finance 101, parenting, basic computer skills, etc. and mentors.
