Meet our Inaugural Impact Award Winner, North Side Housing and Supportive Services
North Side Housing and Supportive Services works to help men and women end their homelessness through housing and comprehensive supportive services. Through the service of WomenOnCall volunteer, Carol, North Side Housing has been able to better prioritize their pressing needs, develop a timeline to address those needs and learn key skills to move forward.
North Side Housing first met Carol in June of 2015 via the WomenOnCall site after the agency posted a project for the development of key messaging. Carol, a marketing and communications professional, developed and revised basic messaging for the organization's general marketing materials and then agreed to another project with the nonprofit. Carol completed a communications audit and provided recommendations for the organization's website, annual report and fact sheets. She also developed key messaging around Giving Tuesday and other fundraising campaigns. Carol recently took on a third project with the agency to support their strategic planning process and better pinpoint their interim organizational goals.
When the agency met Carol, the staff found themselves “at a crossroads lacking strategic direction and internal expertise about next steps." Through her time with the agency, Carol not only completed important projects but provided the mentorship to ensure her contribution is sustainable. Given that Carol has been on the Board of Directors of a large human services organization in Chicago and came to North Side Housing with a strong understanding of the landscape the agency faces, she was able to pick up the programs quickly and translate their impact into relatable marketing materials. North Side Housing wrote that “her combination of strategy management and marketing experience filled a gap within their board of directors and staff knowledge. “
Without Carol, North Side Housing staff noted that they would still be seeking direction around strategic priorities and "possibly stuck in limbo without any measurable progress toward these goals." Her volunteer support has enabled them to identify a clearer roadmap for the organization and to better articulate their story and impact within the community. Thank you, Carol, for your willingness to share your strengths to help North Side Housing grow!
