Takeaways from the National Conference on Volunteering and Service
This year's National Conference on Volunteering and Service took place in Washington, D.C. and brought in key leaders from throughout the country to discuss volunteerism. Here are several highlights from the event:
- A new report from the National Conference on Citizenship was cited, stating that “volunteers have a 27 percent higher likelihood of finding a job after being out of work than non-volunteers.” Presenters said social entrepreneurship, the act of creating innovative solutions to the world's problems, is one way to get more people involved in giving back and could create more jobs. The trend has been on the rise, partially due to Millennial social entrepreneurs. Check out the full report here.
- During a roundtable on skill-based volunteering, representatives from A Billion + Change said Millennials have the lowest volunteer rate of any group at 26 percent. Lack of time, not enough social or team opportunities and not being asked are key factors that hinder Millennials from volunteering. Skills-based volunteering and corporate volunteering were suggested as ways to get Millennial volunteers more involved.
- Once again, corporate/nonprofit partnerships were a hot topic at the conference. Panelists suggested that not only should you prep to meet with a potential donor by preparing a sponsorship packet, but you should also learn the language and culture of the company. Bring specific requests to meetings with businesses and share how both organizations will benefit. Organizations may not want to participate in hands-on volunteering, and skills-based volunteering may be better suited to the company's culture and goals. According to Deloitte, relationships with corporate donors can eventually develop into being ambassadors for each other. Think of corporate partnerships like dating. It takes time to form a partnership. You don't meet somebody and then get married the next day!
